The first step or entry level examination in a ‘Chartered Accountancy course’ is usually known as CPT i.e. Common Proficiency Test which is an objective type test consisting of 4 subjects. These four subjects namely Mercantile Laws, Fundamental Accounting, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude are asked to test the basic understanding of the candidate in these subjects.

The exam consists of 200 questions comprising 1 mark each and conducted in two separate sessions of 2 hours each with a small break in between. The first session is of Fundamental Accounting – 60 marks & Mercantile Laws – 40 marks and the other session is of General Economics – 50 marks & Quantitative Aptitude – 50 marks.

To pass this exam, a student has to secure a minimum of 50 % marks in aggregate and 30 % in each subject. Also, there is a negative marking of 0.25 for each wrong answer by the student.
